DESCRIPTION:Topic: Crossroads\, Creeks\, and Clashes: Civil War Skirmishes in Cherokee and North Cobb County\, 1864 \nSpeaker: Gerald Flinchum \nDescription: The skirmishes along Noonday Creek that occurred from June 11th to June 27th\, 1864 are still seldom covered by the multitude of Civil War (Atlanta Campaign) writers and “experts.” Neither the cavalry action at Woodstock in Cherokee County and the Noonday Church\, Lattimer’s Mill cavalry battle\, nor the assault at Brush Mountain in Cobb County are recognized. No historical markers exist to note any of these actions. Hopefully\, this presentation may shed some light on those actions. Real Estate and commercial development have virtually wiped out most of the sites that occurred during this period; however efforts to document with maps and photographs may help those interested in local history. \n\n\nBio: Gerald W. Flinchum is an Army veteran\, including a tour in Vietnam in 1971-1972 and service in the Georgia Army National Guard and Army Reserve. Leaving the service in 1988\, Gerald completed a 28-year tour with the telephone company and a two-year contract with IBM. A graduate of Dekalb College (1996)\, since 2017 a history instructor at Kennesaw State University\, College of Professional & Graduate Studies – OLLI program\, and in 2019\, an instructor at Emory University’s-Adult Education OLLI program\, teaching a wide range of Nineteenth history-related courses.
