Background: In 1994, Cobb County Genealogical Society published Cobb County, Georgia Cemeteries, Volume III, Marietta National Cemetery.  According to the Preface, work on this volume began before 1991. Section III, Interments After the War Between the States, and Section IV, Memorials Not Burials, includes those fallen during World War II, and they are listed alphabetically, but they are not listed separately by conflict.

In 2020, Don Milne founded the Stories Behind the Stars (SBTS) non-profit organization to organize one central digital location to collect the stories of the 421,000+ Americans who were killed during World War II. These stories will be digitally linked to all war memorials and cemeteries by a smartphone application (Find a Grave) so visitors can read the individual stories of the fallen. This national effort, researched, written, and financially supported by volunteers who want to see the fallen remembered, will ensure that future generations will be able to learn about each of the Americans who paid the price for the freedoms we take for granted every day.

Project Description: A member of Cobb County Genealogical Society (CCGS) began volunteering for Stories Behind the Stars (SBTS) in early 2023. As part of his volunteer efforts for SBTS, he started a personal project to create stories about the WW2 fallen in our own Marietta National Cemetery (MNC). Starting with the CCGS Volume III, and then using other records on Ancestry, Family Search, and Fold3, he developed a composite list of the WWII fallen in this cemetery. Based on this research, and several visits to the Marietta National Cemetery, we identified 361 WWII fallen heroes interred or memorialized in the cemetery. In early 2025 CCGS adopted this project and the stories were completed in December 2025.

A listing of the fallen WWII heroes at MNC is on the CCGS website.
