Topic: Exploring Genealogical Resources from the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands

Speaker: Dr. Shelley Viola Murphy

Description: In this session, Dr. Murphy will delve into the valuable genealogical resources provided by the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, commonly known as the Freedmen’s Bureau. Established after the Civil War, the Bureau played a pivotal role in assisting newly freed African Americans by providing food, housing, education, and legal support. For genealogists, the records created by the Bureau offer a treasure trove of information, including marriage records, labor contracts, and records of complaints and disputes, all of which are invaluable for tracing African American ancestry during the Reconstruction era. This session will equip you with strategies to effectively navigate these challenges and maximize the potential of the Freedmen’s Bureau records in your genealogical research.
