Topic: Stories Behind the Stars – WWII Heroes

Speaker: Loren Plisco

Loren Plisco is an amateur genealogist, who has been working on his family tree – and his wife’s family tree – for over 35 years – off and on, of course. His mother started working on her family tree in the 1980’s, the old-fashioned way with typing on paper forms, and writing letters to family members, and Loren has continued her work, using current technology. And his wife’s paternal aunt started their family tree when she was a county clerk in Vermont for over forty years.

Loren has a bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy and a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University. He served on submarines in the US Navy and worked as engineer for the federal government – and has retired from the Naval Reserves and the Federal Government. Being a retired engineer, Loren gets great joy from solving problems, and now he is getting serious about genealogy in his retired life.

Description:

Loren has been volunteering for the past year for a group called Stories Behind the Stars, an organization that is writing short stories about each of the World War II fallen – over 400,000 stories. The organization is supported by Ancestry, Newspapers.com, Fold3, and Together We Serve. The stories will reside in memorials on Fold3 and will be linked to the memorials on Find A Grave. Recently they have been working on stories that are linked to the Apple+ streaming show Masters of the Air. The group has 100s of volunteers, and about 40,000 stories have been written so far, and the ambitious goal is to finish by the end of 2025 – the anniversary of the end of the war. \
