Topic: The Genealogist’s Journey: A Beginner’s Guide to Tracing Your Family Tree

Description: This guide uses the Hero’s Journey framework to guide beginners through the family history research process. We will discuss the book’s inspiration and how the Hero’s Journey keeps researchers motivated by exploring three stages: Departure (starting research, overcoming hesitation, finding mentorship), Initiation (facing challenges, balancing time, gaining insights), and Return (understanding ancestors’ roles in history, refining research, and sharing results).

Speaker: Donald Allen Jones

Donald Allen Jones graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Georgia Southern University and began contributing to his local newspaper, became an administrative assistant for a local organization, and a GED tutor and substitute teacher. Jones’ writing career began in 2007 when his poem ‘The Confederate Soldier’ was published in Confederate Veteran Magazine. He went on to publish a second poem, ‘Their souls scream out to me’ in the same magazine in 2011. In 2021, Jones released his first book, ‘A Brave Man’s Country: Two Lewis Uncles Who Served in the Confederate States Army’, an historical account of two of his ancestors who fought for the Confederacy during the War Between the States, and his second – ‘The Genealogist’s Journey: A Beginner’s Guide to Tracing Your Family Tree’ was published in 2023.
